Marolin is best know for their paper mache work, however, this line of plastic nativity figures is known as “nostalgische plastik.” During the 1970s, Marolin’s factory was located in the communist East Germany. Due to severe limitations on trade, as well as government oversight and eventual takeover of production, Marolin was producing lower-cost plastic figures for the East German and Russian markets. After reunification, Marolin was able to re-acquire their factory and go back to their paper mache production - but many who grew up in East Germany during these times still remember such plastic figures with fondness, leading Marolin to produce this line again.
